About Us

Tucson’s Oldest and Largest Barber College

Instructors Richard & Kara

Hollywood Barber College has been licensed with the Arizona State Board since 1994. We are the oldest barber college in Tucson and awarded the “Best Barber College” in 2022. Our reputation for excellence is attributed to the hard work of our exceptionally talented instructors, dedicated staff and, of course, our students. Ninety-five percent of Hollywood graduates pass both their written and practical licensing exams the first time.

Richard teaching students

We have classes each morning to prepare you for your written exam.  At Hollywood, your written  tests are computerized so you will immediately see your score.  You will learn different haircuts; tapers, fades, fauxhawks/mohawks, flat-tops, yogi’s, brush cuts, etc.  Most importantly you will learn the Gentleman’s Haircut which is required to know in order to pass the Arizona State Board exam for licensing.

We take pride in our traditional educational approach. At Hollywood you will learn the art of barbering including traditional straight razor shaves. You will also learn many different haircuts such as tapers, fades, fauxhawks/mohawks, flat-tops, and women’s styles to name a few. Most importantly you will master the classic Gentleman’s Haircut required to pass the Arizona State Board exam for licensing. We have classes each morning to prepare you for the written portion of the exam.

Hollywood History in the News

From Arizona Daily Star – 1998

The Story

Ray and Carol Campas have owned haircutting salons together for 18 years. Ray Campas, whose accomplishments include a second place finish in a national men’s hair-styling contest, gave haircuts in downtown Tucson in the 1950s and opened the first men’s hairstyling salon in Tucson in 1965. Carol Campas has been in the cosmetology business for more than 30 years.

Five years ago, they opened the Hollywood Barber College. They were motivated to become instructors and help young adults find a profession after their daughter spent years grappling with a substance abuse problem.

At any given time, Hollywood Barber College has around 30 students.

With a full-time schedule, a student can graduate in 10 months. Carol Campas says some students get funding from the Department of Economic Security and some students set up custom payment plans directly with Hollywood Barber College. The school recently enrolled students from the San Manuel area when the mining company laid off hundreds of employees.

Graduates of Hollywood Barber are eventually licensed by the Arizona Board of Barbers. Barbers specialize in work with electric clippers and scissors, while cosmetologists specialize in working with chemicals for hair coloring and perms. Carol Campas would now like to capitalize on the initial success of the barber college by increasing its size and its offerings.

Don’t Think I Could Have Picked A Better Barber School To Attend

I don’t think I could have picked a better barber school to attend, all of the instructors are very helpful and knowledgeable. There is no place with a better vibe than HBC. I would advise anyone who is looking into becoming a barber to come in and take a tour.

Greeted By Everyone

I just moved to Tucson. So, this is my first time going there. I was greeted by everyone. Which was really cool. Yes, that was done for everyone coming in. I immediately felt welcome. Got my name and what I wanted done. It was a beard trim. The connected me with Diego with a hearty hand shake. He trimmed my beard. It is they way I like it. The instructor was close enough to help if needed. I will be back! You should try it as well!!! Thank you!

Students Were Amazing

I took my grandson to Hollywood Barber College for a haircut. They took great care of him. The staff was wonderful. The students were amazing. The always say welcome in when you come through the door. The school was clean for as busy as it was. I would recommend anyone to get their haircut at Hollywood and it’s cheap. If you want to be a barber this is the school I would recommend.

The team at Hollywood are the best, the talent knowledge is shared from to the other, it’s a family vibe feeling and is worth a visit. You will be back again and again and will not want to go anywhere else.

Looking for a barber school in Tucson? I can’t recommend this place enough.

A lot of customer reviews, but this is a review from a former student.

In terms of passing exams and job placement, this is probably the most successful, if not one of the most successful schools in the state. I had a job lined up the day after I got my results, the same can be said for just about every student I know.

Last I checked, the school was 15/15 for the most recent people passing the state board.

Its a family run business that has existed since the 80’s. They care about their students and their success. They also care about their clients, where the lion’s share has been going to the school for 15+ years for their haircuts.

They truly send their students to the state board examinations well prepared. If you aren’t prepared, that’s not on them… promised.

If you are looking for a barber school in Tucson, I could not recommend this place enough.
