About Us
Tucson’s Oldest and Largest Barber College
Hollywood Barber College has been licensed with the Arizona State Board since 1994. We are the oldest barber college in Tucson and awarded the “Best Barber College” in 2022. Our reputation for excellence is attributed to the hard work of our exceptionally talented instructors, dedicated staff and, of course, our students. Ninety-five percent of Hollywood graduates pass both their written and practical licensing exams the first time.
We have classes each morning to prepare you for your written exam. At Hollywood, your written tests are computerized so you will immediately see your score. You will learn different haircuts; tapers, fades, fauxhawks/mohawks, flat-tops, yogi’s, brush cuts, etc. Most importantly you will learn the Gentleman’s Haircut which is required to know in order to pass the Arizona State Board exam for licensing.
We take pride in our traditional educational approach. At Hollywood you will learn the art of barbering including traditional straight razor shaves. You will also learn many different haircuts such as tapers, fades, fauxhawks/mohawks, flat-tops, and women’s styles to name a few. Most importantly you will master the classic Gentleman’s Haircut required to pass the Arizona State Board exam for licensing. We have classes each morning to prepare you for the written portion of the exam.
HBC has 35 individual student stations along with wash bowls, color, chemical and wax bar. This presents the opportunity to learn multiple different services that gives our students increased professional value beyond graduation. We work to ensure that each student provides services every day and our loyal clientele offers a variety of challenges for our student barbers.

The Story
Ray and Carol Campas have owned haircutting salons together for 18 years. Ray Campas, whose accomplishments include a second place finish in a national men’s hair-styling contest, gave haircuts in downtown Tucson in the 1950s and opened the first men’s hairstyling salon in Tucson in 1965. Carol Campas has been in the cosmetology business for more than 30 years.
Five years ago, they opened the Hollywood Barber College. They were motivated to become instructors and help young adults find a profession after their daughter spent years grappling with a substance abuse problem.
At any given time, Hollywood Barber College has around 30 students.
With a full-time schedule, a student can graduate in 10 months. Carol Campas says some students get funding from the Department of Economic Security and some students set up custom payment plans directly with Hollywood Barber College. The school recently enrolled students from the San Manuel area when the mining company laid off hundreds of employees.
Graduates of Hollywood Barber are eventually licensed by the Arizona Board of Barbers. Barbers specialize in work with electric clippers and scissors, while cosmetologists specialize in working with chemicals for hair coloring and perms. Carol Campas would now like to capitalize on the initial success of the barber college by increasing its size and its offerings.
